About this show
**"Old Joseon, New Fragrance" β A Performance of Rediscovered Korean Dance** This performance brings back to the stage traditional Korean dances created by Han Sung-jun β a pivotal figure in Korean dance during the Japanese colonial era β that have since been lost to time. The Seoul-Gyeonggi Dance Research Society recognized a critical gap in how Korean traditional dance has been passed down: too narrow, too focused on a single line of succession. In response, they launched the *Seoul Dance Research Series*, dedicated to uncovering forgotten and nearly vanished dances. Using newspaper archives, historical documents, recordings, photographs, and oral testimonies, the group works to restore these intangible dance traditions to the living stage. *Old Joseon, New Fragrance* brings together the most acclaimed works from this ongoing research β pieces that resonated with both critics and audiences. The program features dances such as **Dangamu, Gunnosaryeongmu, Hwajanga-chum, Chorip-dong, Baramu,** and **Seoul Shaman Dance** β works that exist in historical records but have never been fully realized in performance. This is not simply a historical reconstruction. Drawing on documented sources while embracing artistic imagination, the show offers what the creators call *"grounded imagination"* β a stage where research and creativity meet to give lost dances new life.
