# Nolbu-jeon: A Comic Family Opera by Park Chang-min **1 Act, 3 Scenes | Composed by Park Chang-min | Libretto by Kim Jae-hee** *Nolbu-jeon* is a comic opera that reimagines *Heungbu-jeon* — one of Korea's three great classical pansori tales — with a twist: instead of following the kind-hearted Heungbu, the story centers on his greedy elder brother, Nolbu. Through satire and humor, the opera reflects on what it truly means to be a decent human being in today's harsh world. --- **Story** When Nolbu hears that his younger brother Heungbu has become wealthy, he can't hide his jealousy. He visits Heungbu to find out the secret to his fortune, then deliberately breaks a swallow's leg — only to "nurse it back to health" — hoping to receive the same magical reward. The following spring, the swallow returns from the south with a gourd seed as a gift. Nolbu eagerly plants it, and this time even more gourds grow than Heungbu's. But instead of treasure, the gourds unleash a parade of monsters and strange figures who strip Nolbu of everything he owns, leaving him ruined and fighting for his life. Just when all seems lost, Heungbu and his wife rush to their brother's side and plead with a mighty general who emerges from the final sixth gourd to spare Nolbu's life. **Will the greedy Nolbu be saved?**
