About this show
[SYNOPSIS] Mendelssohn opens the program with his *Fantasia in F-sharp minor*, subtitled the "Scottish Sonata." Despite its name, the work is not a traditional sonata but a free-form fantasy in three connected movements, evoking the wild and brooding landscapes of Scotland. Scriabin's *Piano Sonata No. 3 in F-sharp minor* follows โ a turbulent, Romantic work in four movements that traces an emotional journey from struggle and darkness toward an ecstatic, if fleeting, resolution. The first half closes with Liszt's *Rรฉminiscences de Norma*, a dazzling fantasy based on Bellini's opera. True to Liszt's virtuosic style, it transforms the opera's most beloved melodies into a spectacular showpiece that pushes the piano to its limits. After intermission, Liszt's transcription of Schubert's beloved song *Gretchen am Spinnrade* offers a moment of tender intimacy. Originally a setting of Goethe's *Faust*, it portrays a young woman lost in longing as she sits at her spinning wheel โ emotions Liszt renders with remarkable sensitivity on the piano. The program concludes with Rachmaninoff's *Piano Sonata No. 1 in D minor*, an ambitious and sprawling work inspired by Goethe's *Faust*. Rich in drama and lush Romantic harmony, it brings the evening to a powerful and resonant close.
