About this show

**Dave Brubeck (1920–2012)** *Points on Jazz* (1961) — Selections for Two Pianos A jazz legend meets the classical stage. Brubeck's *Points on Jazz* was originally composed for a ballet, and these selections showcase his signature blend of jazz idioms and classical structure — rhythmically inventive, harmonically rich, and endlessly engaging. --- **Josef Suk (1874–1935)** *Elégie* for Piano Trio, Op. 23 A heartfelt elegy from the Czech Romantic tradition. Suk — a student of Dvořák and later his son-in-law — pours tender emotion into this short but deeply expressive piece for violin, cello, and piano. --- **Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943)** *Suite No. 2 for Two Pianos*, Op. 17 One of the crown jewels of the two-piano repertoire. Rachmaninoff's Second Suite is a showpiece of sweeping lyricism and brilliant virtuosity, moving through a bold march, a dazzling waltz, a tender romance, and a fiery tarantelle. --- **— Intermission —** --- **Darius Milhaud (1892–1974)** *Scaramouche*, Suite for Two Pianos, Op. 165b Bright, witty, and irresistibly fun. Milhaud's *Scaramouche* bursts with color and rhythm, culminating in the famous *Brazileira* — a samba-infused finale that never fails to delight audiences. --- **Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827)** *Piano Trio No. 4 in B-flat major*, Op. 11 — *"Gassenhauer"* Beethoven at his most playful. The nickname *"Gassenhauer"* means a popular street tune, referring to the catchy melody Beethoven borrowed for his final movement's theme and variations. Accessible, charming, and full of wit — a perfect close to the evening.
