Meeting the Buddha on Namsan, the Buddhist Utopia of Silla
About
Along the slopes of Gyeongju's Dongnam Mountain, Buddhist figures from the Silla period are carved into the rocky faces of valleys such as Tapgok, Mireukgok, and Bulgok. At Chilburam, another trail destination on Namsan, visitors can encounter some of the finest Buddhist sculptures of the Silla era, including the Chilburam Rock-Carved Buddhist Sculptures designated as a National Treasure and the Sineonam Rock-Carved Bodhisattva Seated in Half-Lotus Position, which seems to gaze down upon the mortal world below. The approaches to Jeonggangwangneung and Heongangwangneung, lined with beautiful pine forest paths, are a welcome bonus on any journey through Dongnam Mountain.
