Gangwha DMZ Bike Journey Along the Wind of Peace

Gyodongdo Island in Ganghwa-gun is home to a roughly 30-kilometer Peace Bicycle Path. The loop course takes riders along coastal fence trails and farm roads, past Manghyangdae — a hilltop viewpoint overlooking the North Korean landscape — then continues along unpaved paths and a coastal lakeside route before returning to the starting point. You're welcome to bring your own bicycle, or you can rent one at Gyodong Jebizip, the tourist information center in Gyodong-myeon. While you're in the area, Daeryong Market, located near Gyodong Jebizip, is well worth a visit. The market was established by refugees who settled here after the Korean War. Tucked into its narrow alleyways, you'll find the weathered charm of a traditional old market sitting side by side with stylish shops that have opened in recent years. About an hour's ride by bicycle brings you to Manghyangdae, set on Bammuri Mountain in the northern part of Gyodongdo. Through the telescopes installed there, the North Korean scenery looks close enough to reach out and touch. On your way back from exploring Gyodongdo, consider stopping in at Cafe Joyang Bangjik in Ganghwa-eup for a cup of coffee — the perfect way to round off the trip.
