Who Qualifies?

  • Foreign nationals of Korean ethnicity — meaning you or your ancestors were Korean citizens

  • Must be a citizen of a country other than China or CIS (former Soviet) states for standard F-4 — different rules apply for these nationalities

  • Koreans who renounced Korean citizenship after acquiring foreign citizenship

  • Children and grandchildren of former Korean nationals

  • Must be 19 years or older

  • Must have no criminal record in Korea or abroad

  • Birth certificate — showing connection to Korean ancestor, apostilled

  • Passport-sized photos

  • Criminal background check from your country of citizenship

Application Process

  • Step 1: Gather proof of Korean ethnicity documents

  • Step 2: Apply at the Korean embassy or consulate in your country, OR apply online through HiKorea if already in Korea

  • Step 3: Submit documents and pay the application fee

  • Step 4: Processing takes approximately 2–4 weeks

  • Step 5: Upon arrival in Korea, apply for your Alien Registration Card (ARC) within 90 days

Renewal

  • F-4 visa is valid for 3 years and can be renewed indefinitely

  • Apply for renewal at your local immigration office before expiry

  • Required documents: passport, ARC, proof of ongoing eligibility

  • Must maintain clean criminal record for renewal

Path to Permanent Residency (F-5)

  • F-4 holders can apply for F-5 permanent residency after living in Korea for 5 years
